Maths Intent

At Lymington CE (Aided) Infant School we strive to ensure Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils are able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. Pupils will make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence when solving problems. We aim to promote enjoyment and love of learning mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion as well as calculation strategies.  We strive to encourage confidence and competence with numbers and the number system and develop the courage to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts. We aim to develop a practical understanding and respect of the ways in which information is gathered and presented.  Pupils are encouraged to explore features of shape and space and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts.  Through Mathematics, we want our pupils to confidently use a variety of mathematical tools, apparatus and language in order to emphasise the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
